Well Tests

The County estimates that at least 30% of private wells in Rock County have high levels of nitrates. FOTR is concerned about the health of our friends and neighbors. Therefore, FOTR is offering free nitrate well tests for 2 wells per member.

Where are nitrates? Nitrates are naturally found in plants and in vegetables in different amounts. They are also found in groundwater depending on a number of factors including:

 The amount of fertilizer and manure applied to crop fields and lawns

 The density of septic systems in nearby areas

 Bedrock or other geological features

 The speed and amount of water moving through the soil from rain or irrigation

Why are nitrates bad? Nitrates dissolve easily in water and do not absorb into the soil. They can easily be carried into the groundwater by rainwater, irrigation, and melting snow as they move through the soil and bedrock into the underlying groundwater. When nitrates get into our drinking water, they can pose a risk to our health. High levels of nitrates or long term use of elevated levels of nitrates may cause:

 Blue Baby Syndrome in babies under 6 months

 Birth defects

 Increase the risk of thyroid disease

 Increase the risk of colon cancer.

If you have a private well, Rock County Public Health recommends that you test your well for nitrates every year and take action to reduce your exposure if your levels are high.
